I would agree that aiming for any one statistic is particularly dull and simple. However, in trying to get AS MANY stats as I can is actually more hard work and interesting than it seems. For example, in theory I would like to get both the most land bought and most land stolen. However, in practise, these two are VERY difficult to achieve in tandem, since stealing land means it's more expensive to buy.
If I try to lose too much land, suddenly I've got no cash to spend on gardeners to steal it back again, although I can spend it to buy land. It's rather difficult, if not impossible, to keep everything juggling just right, which to me is an interesting challenge. Probably only to me though
